PHONE REVIEW: KYOCERA "SLIDER SONIC"

Review Date: 11 June 2007
The Kyocera "Slider Sonic" was released in 2005 as Virgin Mobile's multimedia phone. With the discontinuation of the Kyocera "Slider V5 *MTV Edition" phone the Slider Sonic became currently the only slider phone available in Virgin's lineup. The Slider Sonic does have a VGA camera with flash and is the only Virgin phone to currently also have video recording. Bear in mind as with all cell phone video, the quality isn't exactly great. Still, it is a very useful and fun feature to use.
The phone also has a music player for for unprotected MP3/WMA files, and ships with a 32MB transflash card. Because 32MB only holds about 8 songs (I would hardly call that a music phone) you'll want to upgrade and purchase a higher capacity memory card, which you can find at any electronics retailer. Be sure to note that you can only store music and videos on the card. To transfer pictures you have to upload them to your online album from Virgin Mobile at a cost of 25¢/picture.
The phone does have a sleek black design, and an innovative "Wheel of Fortune" type menu. However, the antenna does stick out on the back, making the phone a tight fit for your pocket. Also, the sliding mechanism on this phone can be stiff to open, and most likely you'll have to use both hands to keep it secure. And, as with all slider phones, the screen can get cracked easily if dropped.

And just so you're aware, the music player 'equalizer' screen shown in the photos above as well as other promotional materials does not really exist, it was just made up to promote the phone's music player capabilities. In addition to the features listed above this phone does have Mobile Email and Mobile IM features available. Call Virgin Mobile At Your Service or visit www.virginmobileusa.com for more information on this and other Virgin Mobile phones.

Overall this is one of Virgin Mobile's most fully-featured handsets, even though there is no bluetooth. Still, this phone is a great deal for what you're getting. The Kyocera "Slider Sonic" is currently available from www.virginmobileusa.com for $79.99 and if your lucky may still be on the shelves at a few select retail stores, my advice is to call ahead before you drive out.
